Charles John Palmer's Perlustration of Great Yarmouth
is surely the greatest work ever published on a single town. It is unique in being written as a description of the town, walking around it whilst describing past events and the exploits of the occupants. The depth of knowledge and the breadth of the subject matter is simply stunning. I have compared this work to many others that were written about other towns in England.
